"What usually happens during an initial orthodontic exam?"
During this appointment, we will take a look at your mouth and determine if orthodontic treatment is necessary and when to begin treatment. If treatment is indicated at this time, an initial orthodontic exam will be scheduled.
In order to determine your specific needs, the dentist will completely evaluate your mouth. This will likely include:
- Impressions of your teeth, from which models are made (these are useful for your dentist, and will remind you exactly how your teeth looked before correction).
- Photographs of your teeth, face, and smile
- X-rays of your head and teeth
- Your medical health history and dental health history
The doctor will then carefully evaluate your specific needs and schedule an orthodontic consultation appointment.
"What is the orthodontic consultation?"
During the orthodontic consultation, we will review your specific treatment plan for correction. Following the recommended plan is important for proper correction. During this appointment, treatment time, cost, and insurance benefits will also be discussed.
"What happens when I decide to get my braces?"
Several days before your actual placement of the braces, we will place spacers between your back molars. He usually uses 8 spacers.
"What are spacers?"
Teeth normally fit tightly against one another. Spacers are inserted before placement of your braces to provide some space between teeth for attaching the bands. There are two types of spacers, small springs or plastic modules. In just a few days they gently move desired teeth slightly apart.
Spacers often cause some soreness, but this goes away in a few days. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to relieve the irritation. Your normal chewing also helps to get your mouth feeling better.
"What do I do if a spacer comes out?"
Call your doctor immediately for a replacement. That little spacer is making just enough room for a comfortable fit for your braces and plays an important role.
Placement of band and brackets or braces
Several days after the spacers are placed, you will be given an appointment for placing your braces. This appointment usually takes about 90 minutes. Your teeth will be cleaned and the bands, brackets, and wires will be placed. We will review how to take care of your new braces at this time. During the first week, your teeth will be tender and you will most likely be eating a lot of soft food. After the first week, your diet will begin to return to normal.
